                    ACNE IPL TREATMENT

How does Intense Pulsed Light help acne?

Acne occurs when the skin’s sebaceous glands produce an excessive amount of oil, which contributes to the clogged pores on the surface and allows for bad bacteria to grow. The result is pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, and inflammation, along with other forms of acne. The short bursts of light sent out by the special applicator targets and kills off the bacteria, which then reduces the total number and severity of active lesions, as well as the occurrence of breakouts.

Who can get this treatment?

IPL therapy is available for all ages! It not only provides a greater than 40% reduction of inflammation, but also an  improvement in the appearance of red and brown spots left behind by previous flare ups. It can be used alone or in addition to certain other acne treatments, such as oral or topical antibiotics. Some types of skin may be at risk for complications so IPL for acne under physician supervision is highly recommended.

What are the contraindications?

  • People with recent suntan or sunburn

  • IPL targets pigment, so people with darker skin tones should consult a physician first

  • Use of retinol or retinoid creams, pills, and or serums should be discontinued 2-4 weeks ahead of time

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid any IPL treatment

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatment varies from person to person, but typically, it takes 2-4 sessions at a weekly interval and then monthly within a three-month period for clearing. After 3 months of treatment, it is usually not needed outside of a rare touch-up.

Are there any side effects?

The treated skin may appear red immediately after treatment, but this subsides within a couple of hours. Intense Pulsed Light therapy is FDA approved, gentle on the skin, and requires no downtime.

How does the treatment feel?

Some describe it as a mild discomfort, but that can be helped with a topical numbing cream that is applied beforehand. Also, cool rollers or packs on the skin during and after treatment makes the 15 minute treatment more comfortable.

What about acne scars?

IPL can be used in combination with fractionated laser treatments that correct the deeper acne scarring caused by longstanding breakouts. Resurfacing the skin in this way will even out your skin’s tone and texture and give you that overall refreshed complexion.
